Located in the south-east of the United Kingdom on the River Lea is the large town of Luton, where RE/MAX Ambassador lives.
Approximately 30 miles northwest of London’s financial hub, Luton is both a borough and unitary authority of Bedfordshire. While the earliest settlement in the area can be traced back thousands of years, the establishment of the town dates to the sixth century as Saxons used the area as an outpost on the river.
Over the years Luton has been known for a few different things, such as hat making. It was also known for the large Vauxhall Motors factory in the area, which began production in 1905 and manufactured cars for 97 years. Production of commercial vehicles continues, and the head office of Vauxhall Motors is still in the town.
These days the area is more notable know for its airport. Opening in 1938, the London Luton Airport is one of Britain’s major airports with over 14.6 million passengers passing through its doors in 2016 alone. Luton is also home to the University of Bedfordshire, as well as the Luton Town Football Club, whose history includes several spells in the top flight of the English league and a Football League Cup win in 1988. Since 1905 the team has played at Kenilworth Road.
During the Sunday of the Spring Bank Holiday weekend, the area hosts the largest one-day carnival in Europe called the Luton International Carnival. Based in the town centre, the carnival is commissioned by the Luton Borough Council and is artistically produced by UK Centre for Carnivals Arts.
